Lottery scammers active in Rotherham area
Date: 1st September 2010 Time: 23:15:55 GMT + 1
A lottery scam has been circulating in the Rotherham, UK area. Police are warning residents to be on their guard about any notifications they may receive regarding lottery winnings.
One elderly resident has already lost £32,000 to the scam after being contacted by the scammers via the telephone and informed that she had won a prize of £400,000 in an overseas lottery. She was then told that in order to get the winnings released to her, she needed to send £1,800. Upon her paying the £1,800, the scammers continued to contact her with further demands for money until she had paid them in excess of £32,000.
An elderly man, also a resident of Rotherham, was also contacted by scammers. He was told that he had won a large prize, but that in order to collect it, he needed to forward £4,000. He became doubtful about the scheme and sent no money.
A police spokesperson said, "People have lost thousands of pounds through such schemes. The prize doesn't exist, and the 'winner' never receives any winnings in return for their cash." The spokesperson went on to state,"If you haven't entered a lottery then you can't have won it."
