Unemployed lotto player wins £1.5 million, takes early retirement

Date: 9th July 2010 Time: 17:56:42 GMT + 1
An unemployed Norfolk man's prospects changed sharply for the better on 3rd July when he won £1.5 million on the British Lotto. The winner has chosen to remain anonymous, but was generous with details about his response to his win.

His first reaction on checking his numbers was disbelief. He said, "I ran to a neighbour and asked her to check it, and she said 'you have got six numbers, bloody hell, you have got six numbers'."

And those six numbers had a special history. The winner's son had scribbled out that particular combination when he was just 23 months of age, and the winner has played them faithfully ever since, for the last 17 years.

That habit has been handsomely rewarded. The 42-year-old former labourer has been unemployed now for close to a year, but can now relax and enjoy life, thanks to his win. "I have decided to take early retirement," he said. I will just enjoy my country pursuits of shooting and training gun dogs."

So far, the Norfolk winner has purchased a new home and has plans for a new custom-made gun. However, he also plans to keep his feet planted firmly on the ground, stating that he'll invest the lion's share of his winnings and live off the interest.

Nonetheless, it'll take some time to get over the thrill of the win. He said, "I am still on a high. I was shaking like a leaf when I got the news, and I have not slept since."
