This is the second most popular draw on the Spanish
lottery calendar. It is held every January on the Day of the Epiphany (also known as Adoration of the Christ Child
by the Magi), and is affectionately called “El Niño” meaning “the Little One”.
Contrary to its name, the prize money is huge! For the 2009 draw, first-place prizes alone will total 120 Million
Euros, with another 60 Million Euros in second-place prizes, bringing the overall prize pool to an incredible
840 Million Euros.
As with all the special draws of Spain’s Lotería Nacional,
El Niño is a raffle-style lottery with pre-printed tickets. This is different from a lotto game, where you
can pick your own numbers. By matching the numbers on your ticket with one of the winning ticket numbers drawn,
you could win any of over 2 million prizes.
With better than 1 in 3 odds and the opportunity to win up to eight times on a single ticket, El Niño
could make the New Year an even bigger celebration!
